Ulsan

UNIST is located in Ulsan, which is recognized as one of the top four Asian industrial cities. The gross area of Ulsan is 1,057㎢ and its population is 1.15 million.

Ulsan is the cradle of modern Korean industries with large industrial complexes, including automotive, shipbuilding and petrochemical plants.

There are several global Korean companies in Ulsan such as Hyundai Motors, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung SDS, and SK Corporation.

On the other hand, Ulsan is also rich in culture and heritage sites, such as the Petroglyphs of Bangudae (National Treasure No. 285) and Cheonjeon-ri stone carvings (National Treasure No. 147).

Ulsan has four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are pleasant. Hot and humid weather lasts from early July to mid September. Winter is mostly dry, cold and windy, and it rarely snows.

To subscribe to mobile phone service, you should select one of three providers: SKT, KT, and LGT.

You can purchase a contract mobile phone or sign up for a pre-paid phone.

Making Phone Calls

All campus offices and facilities are connected with a four-digit extension number. To call from out of Ulsan, use area code 052 followed by prefix 217.

International Calls

To make international calls, you need to dial the access code [001, 002, 00365, or 00700] + country code + area code + local number. It is advised that you use prepaid phone cards when making international calls since it is cheaper. International calls from mobile phones tend to be of high rate, and will appear on your phone bill. Internet based services like “Skype.com” are an affordable option.

The only currency that is in circulation as legal tender in Korea is the South Korean Won (KRW). Students will not be able to use US dollars or any other foreign currency. Most major bank credit cards can be used nationwide, and students may exchange foreign currency at local banks and post offices.

Opening a bank account

The nearest bank on campus is ‘BNK (Kyongnam Bank)’ which is open from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

At the BNK, you need to get a queue number ticket from a machine and wait your turn.

ATM(Automatic Transfer Machine)

You can withdraw cash from ATMs located at the campus as well as off-campus with your UNIST ID card (debit card). Through ATMs, you can transfer or withdraw your money.

Driver’s License

With your own driver’s license

A country which allows Korean licenses to be exchanged to licenses of that country without any separate test is called ‘acknowledged country’.

In cases where the acknowledgment of Korean licenses changes after the enactment of public notice and notification of that fact has been given, the system after the change will be followed

  • A license issued by an acknowledged country: Only a health check is necessary.
  • A license issued by an unacknowledged country: A health check and written exam (40 multiple choice questions; available in Korean, English, Chinese, or Vietnamese).

New acquisition of a driver’s license in Korea

Anyone over 18 years old is eligible to obtain a driver’s license. There are two classes of Korean driver’s licenses. In Korea, you are allowed to drive certain vehicles depending on the type of license you have. Every individual should have a certain level of knowledge of traffic laws before taking the driver’s license test. Before taking the test, applicants are required to take traffic safety lessons. In order to obtain a driver’s license, applicants should pass the three tests: Written Test, Basic Technical Skill Test, and On-road Driving Test.
