Health Insurance for International Students

All international students including a visiting and exchange student staying in Korea are subject to a mandatory subscription to Korea National Health Insurance(NHI) from March 1, 2021.

Enrollment

As the subscription is mandatory for all students who hold the D-2 visas, NHI is subscribed automatically by the Korean government from the date of foreign registration completed. It may take up to 1 month to finish the foreign registration, it’s advisable to have travel insurance or Korean private insurance to cover your medical costs until you join NHI.

Contributions

Contribution = Contribution score X Value per score (KRW)

The method is same as local resident’s

  • If the calculated insurance fee is less than the average fee, the average insurance fee levied.

Foreigners permanently residing in the country.

  • Calculation of contribution : the method is same as that of local resident’s
  • Visa types : permanent residence (F-5), marriage immigrants (F-6)

Reduction of insurance feeD-6(religion), G-1-6(humanitarian status), G-1-12(dependents of the G-1-6): 30%

F-4(Overseas Korean student), Korean National student, D-2(Student), D-4(General Training) visa holders as follows

  • However, the household which consist of only minors is excluded from the reduction policy.
  • Persons who live on an island or in remote area, defined and identified in the publication written by the Minister of Health and Welfare: 50%
  • Persons who live in a farming/fishing village, or quasi-farming/fishing village, defined and identified in the Article 46(2) of ——Enforcement Rule of NHI Act: 22%
  • Farmers and fishermen who live in a farming/fishing village or quasi-farming/fishing village: 28%However, in the case of D-2, D-4, F-4 visa-holders, the contribution rate discount rate will be applied accordingly.

If you want to pay the monthly contribution as a family unit, you must submit a document that proves your family relations, such as a marriage certificate and request NHIS for collectively issuing a month contribution bill for all family members.

In the case of household, it should meet the following criteria,
– whose annual income is less than KRW 3.6 million and the standard asset value is less than KRW 135 million,

Payment
  • Undergraduate students’ insurance is financially supported by UNIST. As the payment bill is delivered to each student directly (to the address registered on the immigration system), a student should submit a bill(picture or scanned version is not accepted) to the Center for International Affairs by every mid-month. If it’s delivered after the 25th of the month, the arrears(penalty fee) may be added day by day, which can be imposed to a student.
Exemption from Subscription
  • Condition: a) if you subscribed to your home country’s insurance before you complete foreign registration in Korea, and b) the insurance covers wider than NHI (=no limit of number and amount for coverage)
    • How to: Apply for the exemption by Fax or visit the NHI branch with your insurance paper(should be in Korean, no need to notarized nor apostille) and application form.
Going abroad for a short period
  • For a short trip, for example, participating in an international symposium or seminar, it’s highly recommended to join a traveler’s insurance. As NHI doesn’t cover any accidents or injuries that occurred outside of Korea, an additional subscription for the trip is advised. Before you leave Korea, you should join insurance.
Reimbursement
  • How to apply for NHI Reimbursement (Only Regular Undergraduate Students-No exchange, GKS, Graduate students)
    1. Write down your Student ID number on both NHI bill and Bank Receipt
    2. Combine them together and covert it to PDF file
    3. Change the title of PDF file into your Student ID number

 

    1. The maximum amount for reimbursement is 75,490
    2. Arrear amount will be deducted from reimbursement.
    3. Reimbursement will be provided for all months that you have paid. (If you paid two months NHI bills, send us the bills and receipt for two months.)
    4. Reimbursement is provided up to July payment of your last Academic year. (We do not provide reimbursement after August, graduation)

  • Automatic Transfer(recommended): With your bank account or a credit card, you can transfer the contribution automatically.
    • How to apply: Call a line for foreigners (033-811-2000), *English, Chinese, Vietnamese and Uzbek available
  • Transfer: To a bank account written on the paper bill, you can transfer the contribution by yourself.
    • Electronic Billing(recommended): a paper bill is delivered to the address you reported to the immigration. For example, if your current address is “UNIST dormitory”, your bill would be delivered to the UNIST post office(basement in the main bldg.). When you apply for electronic billing(email), 200 won is discounted every month from the monthly contribution.
